Installing Cydia Applications – OpenSSH

If you’ve followed along with me on this post – Setup Cydia installer and installing jailbroken applications, your iPhone should ready and you can start to install any of the Cydia application available on the installer. Most of the applications are free of charge whereas some of them, you need to purchase. So far, I’ve not purchase any of the paid application from Cydia installer as I found that it’s not really to me.

I heard that I can unlock my iPhone 3G/3GS after I’ve jailbroken it, is this true?

Yes, you can unlock your iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS by installing the ultrasn0w from Cydia installer. This guide can help you to unlock your iPhone 3G. Although the guide is for iPhone 3G, but it can be used to unlock your iPhone 3GS as ultrasn0w can unlock both devices.

If your iPhone does not require you to unlock it, I think the first Cydia application you’re going to install would be OpenSSH, which allows you to communicate with your iPhone from your PC. You need SSH into your iPhone using WinSCP (windows) or Cyberduck (mac) so that you can access the iPhone files system, such as transfer data to or from your iPhone. Normally, I will SSH into my iPhone to backup and restore my data manually, including Contacts, SMS, Calendar and Notes. I’ve written a guide that shows how you can SSH into your Apple iPhone using WinSCP and the tool is included in the guide.

Next, we’ll look at the Cydia application to tweak your iPhone settings. So, make sure you’ve subscribed to the RSS feeds.
