iPhone OS 3.1 software update has been released and available for download through your iTunes or you can download manually here. While you’re downloading the update, you might want to read iPhone 3.1 software walkthrough posted by The iPhone Blog. If you insist to update your iPhone after reading the walkthrough, make sure you’ve also read Rock Out without Lockout from iPhone Dev Team, which is trying to warn the iPhone 3G/3GS owner that is updating to firmware 3.1 as you’ll lose the ultrasn0w unlock.
Click here to check wether your iPhone is locked to any network carrier according to your country. If you found that your iPhone is locked, you can update your iPhone with Pwnagetool that won’t update its baseband version. There are iPhone in certain countries are unlocked sets, including Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Italy and more. And if you’ve noticed that iPhone in Singapore is also an unlocked set, I can restore or update my iPhone to firmware 3.1 without caring too much about the ulrasn0w unlock.

Is it updating to 3.1 will cause the iPhone being locked down forever and there is no way to unlock it? I updated my 3.1 and now I can just only make emergency calls and it ask me to put a valid SIM Card in order to activate the iPhone. I regret and really don’t wanna lose my phone just because of the 3.1 update and now turn into a piece of junk. I bought mine from China and it’s a AT&T version. Before I have it unlock and jailbreak to be use in Malaysia but now it’s lock. Help please !
Baseband version will be updated on iPhone 3G/3GS 3.1 and ultrasn0w 0.9 unlock won’t work for this update.
Currently, iPhone dev team is working hard on the unlock for this firmware update. You can check their blog for the ultrasn0w update.
So the unlock won’t work for this update temporary or permanently? I don’t want to lose my iPhone and can it be save?
Hopefully iPhone dev team will give us a big surprise on their next release.

Yong zheng, my iphone is locked. I have only really started to research unlocking and jailbreakin. I have checked various web blogs and sites for the pros and cons but the allways seem to contradict each other. Any info anyone could provide me with would be greatly recieved.

Means you are in the same condition as me? I have a 3GS 32GB and being “foolish act” updated to 3.1 and now it ask me to insert a valid sim card to activate iphone. I’ve put my local SIm and it wouldnt work when I plug into iTunes. It’s AT&T set so I its locked to that carrier. I should’ve bought my country official unlock set but I was con for being stupid that time. Its an expensive “Brick” now. i do not know what to do. People are giving hopes, some are pouring cold water saying that might be locked forever, till now no downgrade, jailbreak for 3GS especially on windows yet. bean88, we are in the same boat. Let’s try to wait for some hope….. Especially the unlock…. I’ve been waiting for 2 weeks, and still no news for the jailbreak on 3GS….. refer to blog.iphone-dev.org , thats the only official site that hacks the jailbreaks and unlock. Everything started from there.
I’ve updated my iPhone 3GS to firmware 3.1 too but officially activated through iTunes. Now will need to wait for the new release of redsn0w.
Are you using AT&T SIM or others? Good for you….. Alvin… bad luck for us who updated a non-official unlock iphone to 3.1 ….. Don’t know if dev-team will really give us a surprise as you’ve said before… I really hope something like that would happen… But alot says that unlock is not possible maybe forever
My iPhone 3GS is a Singtel set in Singapore. Yeah, hopefully iPhone dev team will be able to jailbreak and unlock iphone 3GS 3.1.
